3D Printed Tigers’ Fan Figurines

When I was a kid, the best way to show your support for a baseball team was by wearing their jersey or their colors and buying a ticket to their game. I was raised in a Yankees household and I still have a picture of me and my grandfather in the stands at the stadium wearing pin-stripe t-shirts. That was a while ago though and die-hard fans aren’t satisfied with just pictures anymore. Now, Detroit Tigers fans can satisfy their craving to mark their loyalty by having a full-color 3D printed figurine made of themselves at the ballpark.

My 3-D Printed Self Is Creepily Accurate And Cheaper Than Therapy

There’s a six-inch statue of me staring at me while I write this. The mini-me was 3-D printed from a photograph taken a month ago and it captures in solid form everything my body was putting out there on that rainy Wednesday morning in Soho. I was running late and had a ton of meetings to deal with later. I grabbed my bag with my laptop in it, got into the photo booth thinking, ‘let’s get this done’ with a minimally viable smile.

Photographs are so 20th century.

3D printing is revolutionizing the way we create all types of objects — including mini versions of ourselves. German company DOOB 3D recently set up shop in NYC, where anyone can get a tiny figurine made of themselves. The company originally developed its technology to scan cancer and stroke victims to be fitted for prosthetics. Now it’s being used to produce 3D selfies.

Take Your Selfie Game to the Next Level

We love looking at images of ourselves. First there were Olan Mills portraits. Nowadays there are selfies and selfie-stick selfies and drone selfies.
If you’re wondering what comes next, Dusseldorf-based DOOB 3D thinks it has the answer—and contrary to what the company’s name suggests, it doesn’t involve getting high and watching Avatar.

DOOB 3D can produce a detailed, four-inch figurine of your body—yes, a 3-D selfie. Making one of these figurines requires a massive pile of hardware and software: 54 DSLRs, 54 lenses, a complex 3-D modeling pipeline, and an $80,000 full-color 3-D printer, not to mention a room-size scanning booth.

Unlike the handheld scanning systems that are widely used for 3D scanning, the DOOBLICATOR is a mobile, contactless, full body scanning system that ensures quick (0,01 sec) and highly precise detection of the human body and other complex surface structures.

Doob Group’s New Shops and High Profile Partnerships Are Aimed at Mass Customization

Last week I covered the Doob Group and its Dooblicator (trans)portable photogrammetric 3D scanner.

Looking into the Dusseldorf based company’s activities I was shocked to find out they span across just a bout every possible application of 3D technologies (scanning, designing and printing) so, following up on my editor, Rachel’s prompt suggestion, I contacted the company to find out more and get some on the ground insight.
